Peter Bruner

Peter Bruner moved to Oxford in 1866 after escaping slavery and serving in the Union Army. Quickly upon moving, Peter took it upon himself to obtain an education and learn to read and write. Peter’s years of service to Miami started at Lewis Place where he was a groundskeeper for Mrs. Lewis. He met his wife, Fannie Proctor, while working here. After Western Female Seminary burned down in 1871, Peter found consistent work cleaning debris and rebuilding the college. Peter also served as a janitor under Dr. Thompson, and he worked in this position for thirteen years spanning the time of University Presidents Tappan and Benton. Peter represents a generational link to Miami and Oxford as his family has become prominent in the Oxford community since his passing.
